Review Your Practice's 2017 MIPS Performance Feedback–Again!

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) has made a correction to the payment adjustment rates originally reported on the Quality Payment Program (QPP) website. This change could affect your 2019 Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) payment adjustment.
Last year, due to hurricanes and other natural disasters, CMS allowed an automatic hardship exception, called Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances, for certain states and/or counties. The hardship allowed a neutral adjustment for affected providers or practices. Unfortunately, this adjustment was not automatically applied, which resulted in many providers showing a 4 percent negative adjustment. Those negative adjustments were factored into the total monies available to distribute among the higher performers.
Addressing and correcting the errors in the scoring logic resulted in changes to the 2019 MIPS payment adjustment. Additionally, to ensure CMS maintains the budget neutrality that is required by law under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA), some clinicians will see changes in their payment adjustment because of the reapplication of budget neutrality. These revisions were made to the performance feedback on the QPP website on Sept. 13, 2018.
Practices should sign in to the QPP website using their EIDM credentials as soon as possible to review their performance feedback. If you believe an error still exists with your 2019 MIPS payment adjustment calculation, there is still time to file a Targeted Review. CMS has extended the deadline to Oct. 15, 2018.
